Fans of Crocworld Conservation Centre’s monthly environmental talks are in for a treat on May 14th, when renowned ornithologist David Allan will become the latest in the park’s long line of influential speakers. Entitled ‘Birds of Prey - New Frontiers in our Knowledge and Identification', Allan’s talk promises to carry on the series’ tradition of celebrating the fascinating flora and fauna of Southern Africa.

In his talk, Allan will give guests an insight into two of his most recent field trips. On the first of these trips, Allan helped several esteemed ornithologists from overseas to document the presence of a bird of prey only recently recorded for the first time in Southern Africa. On the second, he joined a team investigating the status of a rare bird of prey in Zululand - and it is tales of these fascinating exploits that will form the core of his talk on May 14th.

Date: Saturday, 14 May

Time: 8:30 for 9:00am to 11:00am

08.30 - 9.00am: Registration and Welcome by Crocworld Conservation Centre.

9.00- 10.30am: Birds of Prey - New Frontiers in our Knowledge and Identification Talk

10.30- 11.00am: Tea & coffee (tea, coffee, scones)

There will be time for questions whilst tea and coffee is served.

Venue: Crocworld Conservation Centre 

Cost: R75.00 per adult and R35 per pensioner or scholar. Payment secures a place for the talk, please send proof of payment (or arrange to pay on the day)

Lunch is not included in the price. For those who would like to have lunch can return to Le Rendez- Vous Restaurant at Crocworld Conservation Centre which has beautiful views of the Coastline and serves light lunches.

WMBD Talk 12th May 2012 report back

Birdlife Trogons celebrated World Migratory Bird Day 2012 with a fascinating talk by guest speaker Andrew Pickles.
Andrew's presentation enlightened the audience on the various types of migrants and some of the amazing journeys these birds embark on twice a year. The importance of bird ringing to help determine the movements of migrants was also covered, along with the various other methods now used to track the birds.
If you missed the talk this time, we will hopefully be able to repeat it for next year's WMBD. It's certainly well worth attending.

Report back on 'Bird Calls and Song' Course

Sandy Olver's brainchild for a bird call course in Pennington, came to fruition on 22nd October and was a resounding success.
The course 'Bird calls and song,' presented by Roy Cowgill and Steve Davis, was hosted by the Pennington Conservancy and Birdlife Trogons Bird Club at Relton Hall in Pennington.
Some 62 participants enjoyed the informative and entertaining presentation which was then followed by a field trip to Umdoni Park.
Refreshments and the hall were kindly sponsored by the Pennington Conservancy.
Thanks go to the Conservancy Committee, Roy and Steve and a big well done to Sandy for making this happen.
We will now be looking at holding the same course in the Port Shepstone area, so watch this space.
